Shirley Temple Drink
If you’re wondering where the name came from, I’ll explain. When Shirley Temple was young, she attended parties with other famous celebrities.
Because she was still a child, she wasn’t allowed to drink the cocktails the other celebrities were drinking.
So, they decided to make her a drink that was non-alcoholic using things they had behind the bar.
This mixture included grenadine, ginger ale, and maraschino cherries. My version is very similar but uses 7-Up instead of ginger ale.
Why was Shirley Temple so famous? See all her accomplishments here.
What’s in a Shirley Temple?
You need only three simple ingredients along with ice.
- 7-Up or ginger ale
7-Up is slightly sweeter than ginger ale. And ginger ale has a bit of a bite to it that lemon-lime soda doesn’t have. You can use either.
PS: Try my Lemon-Lime Party Dip, it’s delish!
What is grenadine?
Basically, grenadine is a sweet syrup that is used to make mixed drinks. It is made from pomegranates.
It is both tart and sweet and gives this Shirley Temple drink a deep red or pink color.
That’s why it’s often used in holiday drink recipes.

Does grenadine have alcohol?
There is no alcohol in it. It’s used simply for flavor and can be added to a variety of different mocktail recipes.
You can find it in the aisle with the other liquor in your grocery store. Or, look for it with the mixers and the club soda.
There are some versions of grenadine syrup that have a 1% alcohol content. So, if you intend to serve this to children or people who do not want alcohol, you will want to make sure that you buy the correct one.
If you don’t have grenadine or can’t find it at the store, you could easily use Torani syrup. Just get the pomegranate flavor.
How to make a Shirley Temple drink
This recipe makes enough for one drink.
- Place ice in the cup. Pour in grenadine.
- Pour in 7-up and stir with a stir stick.
- Add two maraschino cherries to the top and serve
If you want to make enough for a crowd, you can simply multiply the ingredients by the number of people.
You can mix it all up in a punch bowl and serve it that way.
What type of glass do I serve a Shirley Temple in?
You can really use any type of glass for this Shirley Temple drink. But, traditionally you would serve them in a tall, narrow glass like a highball cocktail glass.
Shop glasses here on Amazon.
If you plan on serving this to kids, any small, clear plastic cup will work. It lets the color of the grenadine show through and makes the drink look fancy.
Or, it works just as well in a red SOLO cup if you plan on serving this as a cocktail for a summer party or barbecue. That way you don’t need to worry about glasses breaking.
Can I adjust the grenadine?
This recipe will make a smaller-sized Shirley Temple drink. It’s the perfect size for kids or adults who want something smaller.
If you want to make a highball-glass-sized drink, you can add more 7-Up and more grenadine.
Typically, it is about one ounce of grenadine to every four ounces of soda.
Just adjust it until the taste is right if you prefer something more or less sweet.
What is a Dirty Shirley Temple?
A dirty Shirley Temple is an alcoholic version.
If you want the taste of a Shirley Temple but prefer alcohol in your drink, you can add one ounce of vodka over the ice in your glass.
That is a Dirty Shirley Temple.
Roy Rogers Drink
Besides a Shirley Temple, If you’d like to try another popular non-alcoholic soda drink, you might want to try a Roy Rogers.
All you need to do is to substitute Coca-Cola for the 7-Up. The rest of the recipe stays the same.
