If you’re wondering how to unclog a toilet, the best option is always to use a plunger. Plungers are specifically designed to loosen whatever is blocking the drain that lets the water out.

But if you don’t happen to have a plunger or it just doesn’t seem to be working, there are a few other options that might work for you.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

First, check the water in the toilet bowl and make sure it’s approximately halfway full. If it isn’t, add hot or boiling water until it’s halfway full.

Next, pour one cup of baking soda into the bowl.

Then, pour one cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl slowly. You’ll want to do it slowly because the reaction may cause an overflow if you’re not careful. Use your discretion on how much or how little you add.

Finally, allow the fizz to sit for 20 minutes. The chemical reaction between these two things will cause fizzing that might loosen the solids in the drain. You’ll know it worked if the water levels have gone done.

Then it’s safe to flush your toilet.

A Drain Snake

Another tool you can use to unclog a toilet is a drain snake. You can use it to loosen whatever may be clogging the toilet. Be careful with this tool so that you don’t damage the drain.

First, prepare the area with old used toilets on the floor area, a bucket nearby, and put on some gloves.

Next, place the end of the auger into the toilet bowl and point it down the drain. You’ll want to turn the handle clockwise, so that the snake extends down into the drain towards the clog.

Then, keep cranking until you feel the cable encounter some sort of resistance. The resistance means you’ve reached the clog.

Finally, push the auger back and forth a few times and then crank the cable back in. You don’t want to bring whatever’s clogging the toilet back up the drain—You simply want to break it down so you can flush the toilet.

Dish Soap

First, heat up a pot of hot water. Make sure it’s hot, not boiling.

Then, while the water is heating up, pour some dish soap into the toilet.

Once the water is hot, pour it into the toilet bowl carefully.

Finally, wait 10-15 minutes. The dish soap and hot water will soften whatever’s blocking the toilet.

Finally, flush. The clog should soften and clear up.

Will a toilet eventually unclog itself?

Most toilets will eventually unclog itself whether you use one of these ways to unclog a toilet or not. Over time, the paper and solid wastes will dissolve. This will loosen the blockage in the drain and eventually allow you to flush.

Of course, this isn’t true if your child has flushed an army soldier or other plastic item down the toilet. In that case, it’s best to call a plumber.
