From Passion to Profession: Turning Your Love of Travel into a Travel Agent Career

It is very important not to confuse such concepts as rest and travel. While traveling around cities, countries and continents, people get inspiration, food for thought, and change their outlook on life. Just a few years ago, I could not imagine that a purchased ticket and a booked hotel would be the beginning of a completely new stage in my life. Traveling has turned into a profession that gives me emotions, pleasure and gives me the opportunity to share my experience with other people.

First Steps: Travels That Changed My Life

Many will probably be surprised, but my first experience of independent travel was a trip to Georgia. I had heard and read a lot about this country, but I wanted to see it with my own eyes. It was as if I found myself in a new reality, a different world. Amazing sincerity of the people, breathtaking landscapes, a unique atmosphere of cities and villages. It seems that life here is completely different.

Then I arranged a trip around Europe, visiting Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. In these countries, I was interested in non-standard attractions and places where hundreds of tourists gather every day. I was looking for real life, wanted to communicate with ordinary people as much as possible, to study this world from the inside, and not through standard guidebooks.

At some point, I realized that I began to live these trips. Therefore, the idea arose to turn my passion into work.

Why I Became a Travel Agent

There is nothing overly difficult about working in the tourism industry. Each of you can check for a Travel Agent Resume Examples, create your own CV and get a job in various companies. But here I want to share my story.

Friends and acquaintances often asked me for advice, asked me to help plan a trip, tell them where it is better to go for this or that purpose. And I realized that I can help, and I do it sincerely, as if for myself.

After thinking about it and analyzing the prospects, I came to the conclusion that it is worth starting to work as a travel agent. This opened up many opportunities and advantages:

  • I continued to travel and learn a lot of new things;
  • I began to share my personal experience;
  • I help other people plan trips;
  • I monetize my experience and knowledge;
  • I am constantly developing and improving my skills.

I hit the jackpot with this profession, because I do what I like, and at the same time I get a decent salary.

What Skills Can a Travel Agent Need

If you want to build a successful career as a travel agent, there are several skills that, in my opinion, play a key role in this.

  1. Communication skills. I can say with confidence that the experience of communicating with people of different cultures and nationalities helps to find an approach to even the most demanding clients.
  2. Knowledge of logistics. Invaluable experience of independent travel has given me the opportunity to clearly understand how to plan a trip, create routes, and not waste precious time on transfers and waiting for planes.
  3. Geography. I have visited all continents and know the peculiarities of the climate, geography of many countries and their regions. Therefore, it is much easier for me to advise clients where it is better to go in winter, summer, autumn or spring.
  4. Selling skills. I do not just tell, but also show people what they can see, what emotions they can experience. All this has become possible due to the fact that I maintain a personal blog, pages on social networks, clearly showing the delights of each country I have visited. If my clients want the same, I am ready to easily organize the best trip of their lives for them.
  5. Planning and attention to detail. This is a very useful skill that I recommend paying special attention to in order to become a successful travel agent. After all, if a client misses a flight, or is faced with an unconfirmed hotel, this can completely ruin the trip. So check all the details several times.

With these skills, it becomes much easier to plan trips, take into account the needs of clients and offer them something that they will really like and will bring them great pleasure.

How to turn a hobby into a profession

I would like to give some more advice to those who want to follow in my footsteps and become a travel agent.

  • Travel and gather information. It is important for you not only to see beautiful places, but to benefit from the trip. Create routes, study hotels, transfers, unique places.
  • Keep a blog. You can create your own website, blog, page on social networks. Post photos, short video reviews. This will attract even more clients.
  • Continue to learn. Attend webinars on tourism, take an online course. Pay special attention to sales and marketing, since this is extremely important in our profession.
  • Start with friends and acquaintances. Help loved ones organize a trip. You can even do it for free. They will tell their friends about you and this is how a client base will begin to form.
  • Be sincere. Tell the truth about the places your clients want to go. They love honesty. Otherwise, if they encounter reality, expecting a fairy tale, they are unlikely to come back to you again.

The profession of a travel agent is not the easiest. But if you love this business and live by it, then you can monetize it and turn it into your life’s work.

Final Thoughts

It is fair to say that a travel agent is not a profession, but a way of life. My story is an example of how one trip radically changes views and makes you discover hidden talents. So keep doing what you love!
