Fix A Cracked Driveway

A crack in your driveway can not only be unattractive, but it can lessen the value of your home if you’re planning on reselling.

What starts as a very small crack can grow all the way across your driveway.

If left unattended it can allow weeds to grow through the asphalt cracks.

The continuous traffic on the cracked pavement over time will cause it to crumble.

Are cracks in a driveway normal?

Yes, as your driveway ages and is exposed to weather, cracks will form and spread in your driveway.

It’s important that you take care of them when they are still small.

If the cracks get too large, it becomes quite the production to fix them.

You may need to call in a contractor to repair cracks if they’re larger than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch wide.

Can driveway cracks be repaired?

If you have a crack that is up to about 3/4 of an inch wide, you can repair it yourself fairly easily.

You will need some type of asphalt patch product. The most common types are trowel-on or squeeze tube products.

There are several different products on the market, take a look and see which one will work best for you.

If you opt for a tubed product, you will also need to get a caulk gun to apply it to the crack.

You should be able to find this at your local hardware or home improvement store. Or, you can get it on Amazon. 

Repairing cracks in your driveway

This is a relatively simple process. You will need this to get started:

• Tube of asphalt patch product (Home Depot / Amazon)
• Caulk gun
• Wire brush
• Trowel

Clean Cracked Area

The first step is to clean the surface of your driveway. Remove any debris that may blow into your newly filled crack.

You need to remove the dirt, grass, and weeds from the crack using a wire brush.

Wash Driveway

After cleaning the crack out, you need to wash and dry the driveway so the patch will adhere properly.

Apply Asphalt Crack Repair Caulking

Remove the tip of the spout on your tube of patch once you’ve placed it in the caulk gun.

Very carefully fill the driveway crack with the patch material until the crack is full. Then, use the trowel to smooth out the area so it’s even.

Allow Ample Dry Time

Allow it to dry for up to 48 hours.

If the patch material soaks deep into the crack, you may need to apply a second coat.
