More than for parties, I like making tomato caprese skewers as summer afternoon snacks. I usually use cherry tomatoes and basil from my garden because they are organic and fresh.

For the past few years, I have also started making these mini caprese bites for Christmas because the blood-red cherry tomatoes are just so perfect for holidays. They match the color and vibe, and they fit in so perfectly.

Everyone in my home just loves these little classic tomato basil skewers. After all, it’s impossible to resist delicious finger food on a stick.

You can enhance the flavors of tomato skewers by marinating mozzarella cheese in a small bowl of olive oil and seasonings of your choice. If you can’t find fresh mozzarella in the market, try using cubed mozzarella instead of any other cheese.

To make yummy caprese salad kabobs, you must purchase fresh yellow or red cherry tomatoes. You can either use the tomatoes from your garden. Next, wash the tomatoes under running water and keep them aside.

Once your cherry tomatoes are ready, you must wash the basil leaves. Remove dirt from the leaves and keep them aside in a bowl. Lastly, take one cup of mini mozzarella and shape them into balls.

After the preparation, you can start making mozzarella and tomato skewers. Insert one cherry tomato, mozzarella ball, and basil leaves on the skewer. Repeat the steps until you make the desired number of tomato basil mozzarella skewers.

Steps to Make Mozzarella Caprese Skewers

Mozzarella Skewers Recipe Tips:

  • Make sure you use very small and juicy cherry tomatoes. If the tomatoes are bigger than the mozzarella balls, you won’t be able to create a balanced taste on the skewer.
  • Likewise, use very small basil leaves because bigger leaves can overpower the overall taste of a mozzarella caprese appetizer.
  • You can marinate the mozzarella balls overnight in olive oil and seasoning to enhance the flavors of caprese appetizer sticks.

Recipe Variations:

  • If you don’t have time to make mozzarella balls at home, purchase already marinated mozzarella balls from the market.
  • Consider slicing the basil leaves and adding them to the marinade. This way, you won’t bite into the basil leaves but still get the flavors.
  • Or you can replace the basil leaves altogether with baby spinach leaves.
  • If you want your caprese skewers to be more cheesy, thread two mozzarella balls and one tomato on the skewer.

Is it possible to make caprese skewers ahead of time?

Yes, it’s possible to make caprese skewers ahead of time. In fact, you can marinate the mozzarella balls in the fridge overnight to make this simple appetizer even more flavorful. Make sure you add the basil leaves on the skewer the same day; otherwise, the leaves will turn brown.

Are caprese skewers healthy?

Yes, Caprese skewers are super healthy because they are made with only three ingredients, i.e., basil leaves, cherry tomatoes, and mozzarella balls. These skewers are a great source of vitamins, healthy fats, and calcium.
