Grab your ground beef and form burger patties that are about 3/4″ thick, and just larger than the buns you’ll be using. Use your thumb and forefinger to create a dimple in the middle of the patty, this helps for even cooking. Sprinkle each side with salt and pepper, or use this applewood rub – it’s is fantastic!

Fire up your grill to high heat 450-500 degrees F. This is the same for gas or charcoal.

Oil the grates with vegetable oil. Use tongs and a paper towel or spear half an onion with a fork and dip it in oil to oil the grates.

Place patties on the hot grill and cook for 4 minutes on each side. This will yield medium burgers if your patties are the average thickness, 3/4″. Grill for less time for a more rare hamburgers, or more time for a more well done burger.

Instructions

  • Preheat grill to high – 450 to 500 degrees F. (usually about 10 to 15 minutes)
  • Form patties about 3/4" thick and just larger than your buns are round
  • Sprinkle each side of the patties with salt and pepper
  • Oil hot grill grates and place patties on grill
  • Grill for 4 minutes on each side for medium doneness. Grill less time for more rare burgers and more time for more well done burgers.
  • Top with cheese and close lid during the last 30 seconds to 1 minutes of grilling if desired.
  • Add burgers to your buns and top as desired
