Bacon Twists

Bacon and puff pastry has always been my absolute favorite, but I never prepared it at home. Mainly because I thought this dish required a lot of time, and I could not exhaust myself in the kitchen all day.

Family dinner during the holiday season has always been a big deal for me as my mother prepares delicious food. But more than the usual dinner, I used to be excited about the special dish she prepared every year.

So, when I became a mom, I knew I had to make that one special dish each year that would excite my kids about the holiday season. And while searching for that dish, I came across bacon and puff pastry twists.

One thing I really liked about this bacon pastry was its ingredients. You only need puff pastry, mustard, and bacon to make yummy bacon wrapped in puff pastry.

Steps to Make Bacon Twist Puff Pastry

I have divided my homemade bacon wrapped in puff pastry recipe into different steps so you do not get confused.

Step One

First, purchase a puff pastry sheet and take them out of the packet. Next, brush the puff pastry with mustard. Lastly, cut the pastry sheet into thin stripes.

Take bacon and add it to each stripe to create a tree-like structure. Next, insert a skewer in each strip to make bacon Christmas trees and keep them aside.

Step Two

Once you have made puff pastry strips with bacon, you need to bake them. So, preheat the oven to 400 F for 15 minutes. Then, bake the mustard bacon trees and enjoy.

Key Tips

  • As this dish contains less ingredients, it’s guaranteed that you will get the best flavors. Before you cut the puff pastry sheet into thin strips, keep the puff pastry in the fridge, so it gets nice and cold. This way, you get the best flaky texture.
  • Pinch both ends when you add pastry and bacon strips to the skewer. It will keep them together during baking.
  • Do not cut the puff pastry strip shorter, as it will get difficult to twist them. Also, the pastry might not hold the shape.
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut the pastry into perfect strips.
  • Brush the top of the pastry strips with bacon on a skewer with a beaten egg. With that, you can sprinkle some poppy seeds to get a flaky and crispy texture.
  • If you cut the pastry into thick strips, it will bake in more time. Plus, the bacon might get extra crispy, which can change the entire taste of puff pastry and bacon.
  • You can use any mustard, but classic French mustard brings out the best taste. With that, you can add extra ingredients like dried herbs, bagel seasoning, and black or white sesame seeds.

Can I prepare bacon and puff pastry in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the puff pastry bacon in advance. Then, before serving the pastry, you can reheat them to warm them. The bacon puff pastry taste will not change.

Can I keep the puff pastry in the fridge?

After you have cut the store-bought puff pastry into strips, you can store it in a container and keep it in the fridge for a maximum of 3-4 days. But if you have made the puff pastry at home, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and keep it for 3 days.

How to keep bacon wrapped puff pastry crisp after baking?

You can keep the baked puff pastry bacon with mustard crips by wrapping them tightly in plastic. Avoid squashing the pastry. Then put it in a zip-lock bag and squeeze out excess air. Or you can also keep the puff pastry in an airtight container.

Why is my puff pastry not crisp?

If you have rolled the puff pastry sheet too thin, your bacon tree pastry will not become crisp. That’s because the pastry won’t rise enough to get that crisp flake.

Is egg wash necessary?

It depends on you: if you wish to seal the edges of your tree bacon puff pastry properly, you can use egg wash. Otherwise, you can avoid it while making bacon puffs.
