Sometimes we need a quick, protein packed meal to keep us going during a busy day. You know what I mean. It’s been raining for a week and after a long day of work, you still need to take care of the yard work.

This past weekend I tackled a home improvement project that had been waiting for me for quite a while. Behind my garage was an empty space, full of raggedy weeds and junk. It needed to be cleaned up and given a new purpose. Once I cleaned the area up and took out all the weeds, I realized that it needed to be graded and leveled out in order to be used.

Working Around the House

I had been planning on making a level pad to store our outdoor furniture and other outdoor stuff over the winter months. Last winter we had stored everything in the garage and it got way, way too crowded. So, this year I’m making a ten foot by fifteen foot pad behind the garage to store our outdoor goods while they’re not in use, and lawn tractor and outdoor summer equipment as well.

Once I removed the weeds and got down to dirt, it was obvious that I needed some fill. I also was going to need to build a stone wall to retain the fill and get things leveled and working properly.

So, I drew my lines, took my measurements and got to work. I used about four yards of fill to bring the ground level up to grade and used about forty stones to make a small stone retaining wall.

I used top soil as fill rather than a hard pack because if we ever want to plant grass in the future, the top soil will take the grass well. In a few weeks, once the soil has had time to settle and pack down, we’ll roll out landscape fabric and add a couple inches of 3/4 inch stone, like we did on the stairs in our backyard.

Backyard Retaining Wall

It was quite a little project, but it needed to get done. It had been raining all week and this was one project I wasn’t going to let sit on the back burner. But, that means I was slacking on other yard work. Particularly the lawn mowing.

Oops. Now, with all the rain and spending the first sunny day on the retaining wall, the lawn hasn’t been mowed in over a week and it’s looking quite ratty. After a long day of moving fill, leveling and building a stone retaining wall, the last thing I have time for today is to make dinner. It’s time for a quick, protein packed meal.
