To make homemade easy buttercream icing, you need to put powdered sugar, salt, vanilla, and butter in a bowl. Then, add a tablespoon of milk and mix all the ingredients thoroughly.

Start by mixing on low speed and then gradually increase the speed so all the ingredients are combined well. At this point, the combined mixture will appear dry.

If you want, you can mix 1 tablespoon of milk to it to get the desired consistency. Avoid adding more milk, as it can make the ingredients runny.

You can add any food color of your choice, or don’t add any color. I have made green buttercream frosting because I’m making them decorate Christmas tree cookies. Adding color to the buttercream cupcakes frosting makes them more appealing and appetizing.

The buttercream frosting will not harden too much because it is not cookie icing. So, do not stack the cookies after putting on the frosting.

Can I refrigerate the frosting?

If you have made buttercream frosting for cake in a large batch, simply keep it on the kitchen counter. The frosting can stay fresh at room temperature for a couple of days.

Once you have put frosting on the baked goods, put it in the fridge to stop the dessert from going stale. The frosting tastes best at room temperature. So, after taking the dessert out from the fridge, let it rest on the countertop for a while before serving.

Can I store leftover frosting?

Do you have leftover frosting? Don’t worry; simply transfer it to an airtight container. This way, your frosting will stay fresh for a week. Likewise, if you are storing frosting in the freezer, it can stay fresh for up to 4 months.

How to fix too-sweet buttercream frosting?

Has your buttercream frosting turned too sweet? Don’t worry; simply add a pinch of salt. But do not add too much salt because it can ruin the overall taste of the frosting.

How to fix too-thick buttercream frosting?

If your buttercream frosting has become too thick, continue adding milk till you achieve the desired consistency.
